I Believe

Ever since my years at University of Arizona's College of Architecture, where I learned about landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and how he carried around a notebook that he would jot thoughts into -- thoughts he called TIBs for "This I Believe" -- I've loved that particular phrase.

Here is a new political ad scheduled to debut in Oregon soon that relies heavily on the phrase, "I believe..."

"This I believe was originally a radio program run by Edward R Morrow, recently revived by NPR. Basically the original gave luminaries of the day 2 mins to wax poetic about their passions. Simple rules really, Keep it short, keep it positive, keep it honest. Today's NPR version also follows these ideas, only now ordinary schlubs like you and me can contribute too.

I have also heard of the Morrow program as well as NPR's show. However, as a 20-something architecture student 20-something years ago, Halprin's TIBs were the FIRST to grab my attention.

Howard supports all passions of the intellect, heart, and soul.
